Bucs: Pirates Claim Xavier Paul

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed outfielder Xavier Paul off waivers today from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Paul was designated for assignment and subsequently claimed by the Pirates. Pittsburgh cleared room for him on the 40-man roster by moving Scott Olsen from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Pittsburgh will have to clear room on the 25-man roster when Paul arrives in town and it appears the move will mean either John Bowker or Steve Pearce will be moved.

Paul, 26, was a .325 batter in Triple-A ball last season. He, like recent Pirates acquisition Brandon Wood, has struggled to translate his player over to the big leagues.

His career average in the majors is .233 in 146 at bats in parts of three seasons. He was a fourth-round draft pick in 2003.
