Man Escapes From Custody In Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) -- Police are searching for 19-year-old Jeffery Tumer after he bolted from the Wilkinsburg Police Station Monday night.

He was being booked on charges of assault, robbery, and making terroristic threats. Tumer had just been picked up on a warrant by two Wilkinsburg detectives, when he ran out the back door of the station.

He was neither handcuffed, nor shackled at the time. He ran down Penn Avenue and vanished. Police searched for him, but had no luck.

A further investigation determined that Tumer had been hiding in a locked bathroom at a Penn Avenue barber shop while police were going door-to-door looking for him.

Wilkinsburg Police Sgt. Larry Singer said an employee at that barber shop, John Lewis, was later taken into custody and charged with hindering the apprehension of a fugitive.

Wilkinsburg Police Chief Ophelia Coleman said she was never notified about the prisoner escape until she was contacted by the media.

Sgt. Singer said Tumer should be considered armed and dangerous since he used a firearm in the alleged robbery.
