Too Early For Alvarez Criticism

By: Mike Vukovcan

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- The popular opinion of Pirate fans seems to be to send third baseman Pedro Alvarez back to the minors. I’ll show you why that talk is crazy.

Do fans realize the team has only played 28 games? Relax.

I realize Alvarez is struggling but sending him to the minors isn’t the answer.

First of all, who are you going to replace him with Steve Pearce? Brandon Wood?

Second, where are the Pirates going?

Here’s some other numbers for fans to chew on?

Coming into today:
Pedro Alvarez: .200, 1 HR, 7 RBI
Jayson Heyward: .200, 0 HR, 9 RBI
Jayson Werth: .221, 4 HR, 7 RBI
Carlos Gonzalez: .228, 1 HR, 14 RBI
Carl Crawford: .155, 1 HR, 6 RBI
Vernon Wells: .174, 1 HR, 6 RBI
Carlos Lee: .194, 2 HR, 5 RBI

I wonder if any talk show or fans in these other cities are bringing up sending these players to the minors? Doubt it….

dude thats a really good article……i love the critics so quick to jump on the pirates back……this is definitely a nice rebuilding stage that we havent seen so strong in so many years………..i personally think this is the stage where we do finally take it up a notch once taillon comes up and anchors the staff i say in 2 years we bring him up…maybe 3……by then we sign 1 big arm ace for say 8 mill a year you could snag a FA like like Justin Masterson…who always was a top prospect and is only 26 yrs old….signed him for : $468,400 a year???!!! thats ludacris that the pirates hang on to guys like Ross Ohlendork for Salary: $2,025,000 ……how crazy is that….and he went to arbitration and WON!!!!! HOW DOES A PITCHER WHO WENT 1-11 LAST YEAR GET PAID 2 MILL A YEAR??!!! CMON BUCCOS MANAGEMENT!!!!! THERES WAY BETTER TALENT OUT THERE FOR 2 MILL A YEAR!!! Thats where the buccos mgt needs to step up there game…..i could take over the buccs and have the rotation looking 3 times as good as it is now for the same amount of money we spend a year on our starting 5 pitchers!!!!! SP SALARY: $12.5 mill a year on our 5 starting pitchers! #1 thats just not good at all….cmon……I think jason schmidt is still getting paid his salary higher than 12.5 mill a year for being retired? not even sure hes still playing ball…..but i know for 12.5 mill i could create a better staff in 5 minutes of research looking at free agency next year….IF YOUR READING THIS BUCCOS MGT…..NEXT YEAR EDWIN JACKSON AND CJ WILSON ARE FREE AGENTS!!!! SIGNNNNN THEM!!!! 2 ACES RIGHT THERE FOR CHEEEEEEAP…..THEN FILL IT OUT WITH MORTON, MCDONALD, CORREIA….THATS A WAY BETTER ROTATION…WE EASILY MAKE THE PLAYOFFS WITH THAT ROTATION AND BATTING ORDER…NOW THAT WE MADE A SMART CALL FINALLLLLLLY….SCOOPING WOOD OFF WAIVERS! N BENCHING RONNY……BEST MOVE IN LIKE 5 YRS SAD TO SAY! THATS MY RANT AND RAVING

    ANYWAY……VERY NICE ARTICLE……

    PEDRO MCCUTCHEN WALKER TABATA——–ANTHONYYY RENDONNNN!

    ANOTHER LITTLE STAT FOR YOU……

VERNON WELLS IS THE 2ND HIGHEST PAID BASEBALL PLAYER IN 2011 BEHIND A-ROID……

VERNON WELLS MAKES A WHOPPING $26,187,500

    PIRATES 2011 PAYROLL = $45.5 MILLION

    ALSO…..CARLOS LEE MENTIONED…..SALARY $19,000,000

HAHAHHAHAHA THE 2 SALARIES OF VERNON WELLS AND CARLOS LEE COMBINE TO MAKE MORE THAN THE WHOLE PIRATES ROSTER!!!!

    WOW!

    Carlos Lee: .194, 2 HR, 5 RBI

    Vernon Wells: .174, 1 HR, 6 RBI

THATS WHAT THE ARTICLE SHOULD OF SAID

  3. Brad says:

I agree give Pedro time, mark teixiera hit almost identical last year. But you guys before me who say we are a pitcher or 2 away… You are clueless. First of all owners won’t spend the money, period. They are in it for their own financial gain. Second, why would said players even come here ? If we see a bargain out there and offer him4 mill a year, don’t you think the Yankees, red sox, cubs won’t pay him 8 mil just to ensure he signs with them? Also if your hopes and dreams lie with a 19 year old pitcher who by your own admission is 2 or 3 years away. We are in trouble. If he was that good, it won’t be 3 years. And I hope to god we don’t draft rendon, he is a solid player sure, but pitching wins titles. Load up on as much pitching as you can afford. Then you can trade some for some bats here and there. This team is 5 years away, at best. IF mgmt spends a bit more. That is a big if. I’m as big of a pirate fan as the next guy, but let’s be real here folks, this team isn’t that good. If they continue at the pace they are on right now. They will be 18 games below .500. That’s horrible. 72-90 is the pace … Do the math. If a few guys get better 78-84… If we can get a free agent or 2 81-81 if we get a few balls bounce our way. 85-77… Still not a play off team. The ONLY way the Pittsburgh pirates will succeed is if current ownership sells the team. Period

  4. Dan says:

Hey Eric that was a very good post and I agree with everything youve said but I am just curious for when you say Anthony Rendon at the end what you think we would do with him. They say hes a third baseman and a third baseman only so it would be kind of hard to say his name and pedro together

    1. mikevuk says:

Dan, if Rendon is drafted, he’d play 3rd and Pedro would move over to 1B

  5. Harry Boards says:

Rumor has it that Jack Wilson will be retained at a reduced salary to secure the ss position. He’s the odd man out in Seattle and will be willing to sign for $1M/yr at the end of the season.

I understand the point trying to be made here, but comparing Alvarez to these names is very much like comparing apples and oranges. I agree that he needs to be given time, but I’m not opimistic.
