Pens Talking With Rupp & Dupuis

By: Mike Vukovcan

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Pens GM Ray Shero has started discussions with soon to be free agents Mike Rupp and Pascal Dupuis.

Shero opened up contract talks yesterday with forwards Rupp and Dupuis.

According to our sources, Rupp and the Pens are likely to reach a deal before NHL free agency begins on July 1st.

Rupp is one of the leaders and most respected players in the Penguins locker room.

Rupp has been able to play in 81 games in each of the last two seasons.

Last season, he earned $825,000.

Dupuis situation will be a tricky one for Shero and the Penguins.

He’s one of many Penguin role players that are entering free agency.

Along with Dupuis and Rupp, Max Talbot, Tyler Kennedy, Arron Asham, Chris Conner and Mike Comrie are all free agents on July 1st.

Dupuis made $1.4 million last season and will likely be looking for a raise next season.

Will the Penguins want to spend that much on Dupuis?

We’ll likely find out the answer to that question fairly soon.

I hope they keep Rupp – he is amazing at blocking the goalie in front of the net, enabling the offense to score. Because of his stature, he is hard to move from in front of the net, which is advantageous to the Pens. I also like Dupuis on Crosby’s line because of his speed and skill, but I think there are a lof of players like him, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pens let him go if he wants too much.

Shero’s top priority is re-signing RFA’s D. Jeffrey, N. Johnson, T. Kennedy and B. Thiessen. Shop Niskanen & Kunitz as a package deal for a top-two, 2-way scoring winger. Together the deal creates $5.225 M in cap space. RFA’s Blake Comeau, Andrew Ladd, Blake Wheeler or Lauri Korpikoski all play the PK & PP and are all good trade options. Sign UFA Ryan Jones of Edmonton for the 4th Line & PK. Release ALL Pens UFA’s,i.e. Talbot, Dupuis, Rupp, Adams, Asham, Conner and Godard. 1st Line Neal, Crosby and Malkin. 2nd Line Tangradi, Jeffrey and RFA Trade. Cooke, Staal and Kennedy on 3. Jones, Letestu and N. Johnson on 4. Defense and Goaltending set. Despres or Bortuzzo Spare D-Men. The WB-S Pens can provide Call-Up Spare Forwards. The “New” Pens team becomes younger, faster and less offensively challenged. Just this Fan’s fast food for thought.

While I agree with most of what you said, I would not trade Connor or Asham – I think they are beneficial to the Pens. Connor plays with the heart of a lion, and Asham is an enforcer. I would, however, consider trading Staal. He is worth a lot of money, and he has yet to prove his worth. He had the perfect opportunity this year to become the leader and he failed. His salary would lighten the salary cap and enable the Pens to get a power forward for Crosby. I also agree with bringing up Deprese.
