What Memorial Day Means To One Local Family

PITTSBURGH (NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA) — Many of us may think of Memorial Day as a chance for a long weekend filled with barbecues and pool openings, but to the families of those who have gone to war and never came back, this holiday is a painful reminder of their loss.

Staff Sergeant Justin Schmalstieg, originally from Stanton Heights, was killed in Afghanistan on Dec. 15, 2010, while trying to disarm an explosive device.

KDKA AM’s Larry and John talk to John Gilkey, father of SSGT Schmalsteig, about how Memorial Day has taken on a new meaning in his family, as well as his son’s legacy.
