Parents Of Kids Found In Closet Want Charges Dropped

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The parents of two little kids found locked in a closet are trying to get the charges against them dropped.

Police found their 8-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son in a bedroom closet earlier this month in Wilkinsburg. The parents say it was just one big misunderstanding.

Marcus Cannady didn't have much to say on his way into court, but he made a string of jokes on his way out and even smiled and waved to our camera.

He and Denita Grayson are charged with endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.

Grayson told police she went to work and that Cannady was supposed to watch the kids, but he wasn't there.

The kids accidentally locked themselves in a closet while playing a game. The 8-year-old called 911 from a cellphone.

When police arrived, they found a note with instructions on what the kids should do if Dad didn't show up.

Grayson's lawyer says she never intended to put the kids in harm's way.

Today in court, the judge ordered both to attend parenting classes, something Grayson hopes will lead to an end to this case.

Once Grayson and Cannady finish those classes they're going back to court and the judge will decide then whether or not to drop the charges. They'll also learn if they'll get their kids back from temporary foster care.
