UPMC Speaks on Battle with Highmark

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — As Highmark moves forward with its merger with West Penn Allegheny Health System, UPMC is fighting the marriage; and both parties are accused of putting patients in between.

Highmark has spoken extensively about the situation, but what about UPMC?

KDKA-AM’s Larry Richert and John Shumway talk to Paul Wood, Vice President of Marketing for UPMC, to find out what his side is saying about the great health care fight of 2011.

Mr Wood is great at twisting the truth. Employees choices are governed by the insurer that their employer is most often forced to select due to the price and richness of the plan. United Healthcare for example has only one plan availabe for the counties surrounding Allegheny County and it’s a very high deductible plan that makes it unrealistic for employers to “pass on” to employees. If these othe inusrers know that they aren’t competing with Highmark what do you think they will do with their pricing.
As for the competion between UPMC and Highmark, what is UPMC so worried about. They have bought up a very high percentage of the hospital systems already. Seems to me that they are motivated by pure greed. In my opinion there should be an anit-trust suit brought against them for monopolizing health care in the Pittsburgh region. They do not have the best interests in mind of anyone but themselves!

Well said! UPMC is whining about Highmark entering the provider market, after UPMC challenged and engaged Highmark by entering the insurer market. Meanwhile, their protest is only at the expense of patients and employers throughout southwestern PA. Unacceptable.

  2. Helen says:

Healthcare today is just one big business. Doctors & patients are just stepping stones to the top UPMCis a big bully who wants it all and does not care who they hurt . Isn’t there some sort of law to stop their bullying?
