HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – At least two residents were injured in a Wednesday afternoon fire in Westmoreland County.

According to emergency dispatchers the fire started in a bedroom on the ninth floor of the Hempfield Towers in Hempfield Township.

The building is a senior living facility. One woman suffered burns to her face and had to be carried down nine flights of stairs for medical treatment.

“As our first crew went in, they found a lady laying in the bedroom area. They pulled her out to the hallway and then we got her outside,” firefighter Tom Lakin said.

Another resident was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The ninth floor of the building had to be evacuated.

The flames were quickly contained and the cause of the fire is unknown.
