PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Investigators continue their search for a person of interest after a 3-year-old boy was shot and killed in a home in Homewood overnight.
Pittsburgh police say they were called to the Tioga Street home around 1 a.m.
Authorities have identified the boy as 3-year-old Zymiere Sewell. Officials say he suffered a gunshot wound to the head while lying in bed with his 1-year-old sister.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
“I want to know the same answers as y’all,” said Anthony Sewell, the father of the victim. “Why [is] there a gun sitting around my son.”
Police say 18-year-old Gregory Dalton, believed to be the mother’s boyfriend, may know what happened this morning. He was also lying in bed with the kids at the time of the shooting, according to police.
“Mr. Dalton allegedly grabbed the gun and fled from the apartment,” said Commander Thomas Stangrecki, of the Pittsburgh Police Department.
Police still aren’t sure who fired the gun, but are weighing all possibilities.
“We do know that there was a gun in that bedroom,” said Commander Stangrecki. “Whether or not the children had access to that gun or not, we’re still investigating the circumstances.”
Anthony Sewell came to the police station this morning for answers, believing his son was incapable of shooting himself.
“Ain’t going to be able to just pick up a gun and pull the trigger,” said Sewell.
However, police say it’s something they have to look into.
“A gun, depending on its size, could be very easily handled by anyone,” added Commander Stangrecki.
Anyone with information on the case is being asked to contact Pittsburgh Police.
