PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A woman whose body was found burned in the Lower Hill was strangled to death, according to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The woman was found dead in the parking lot of an apartment building just before noon Sunday.
Pittsburgh Police say the woman is 57 years old, but have not released her name until they can find her next of kin.
The woman has no known address. Police also don’t have a motive at this point.
“Right now, we’re trying to identify any of her relatives that may be in the area to notify them of her death and then we can release the name on her,” Pittsburgh Police Commander Thomas Stangrecki said.
A time of death has not been established, but someone told police they heard screams at about 6:30 a.m. Sunday.
The location of the woman’s body is several blocks away from the CONSOL Energy Center. It’s an area frequented by homeless people.
“In my opinion, it was probably someone taking advantage of a woman,” Darla Allen said.
“She probably was homeless, on drugs and they might have propositioned her and offered her something and took her back there and did what they wanted because they figured no one would care.”
Police have been canvassing the area, but detectives say they’re not getting any cooperation from people who might have seen something or know something.
There are surveillance cameras in the area, and they will be checking them to see if they can get some leads.
They’re asking for anyone who might know something to contact them.
