Stuffed Bear Thieves Come Forward

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- Uniontown police are still trying to get the facts in this case, but it looks like seven 20-somethings have owned up to stealing a stuffed 800-pound bear from a bar in Uniontown.

They say they're ready to bring it back.

He doesn't have a name, but the stuffed bear is sure popular with customers at the Eagle Nest above Sam's Restaurant.

"They get a Steeler hat on him, Steeler towel, take picture with it," John El-Ayazra, the bar owner, said. "I have people play cards, they take a card hand and put it in his paw."

The bear was shot in Russia and was a near-record size. It's estimated to be worth $10,000.

But now it's stolen and damaged. Even so, El-Ayazra doesn't want to press charges if they fix it and bring it back.

"They are of the age – the time they really need a break in their life – not to throw them in jail," he said.

He says all seven men have called to apologize and are promising to take care of the damages to the prized taxidermy specimen. Bar patrons will have their photo op back.

The bear should soon return to the Eagle Nest Bar soon, but this time the bear will be chained to the floor.
