Most Men Can’t Perform Basic Home Improvement Repairs

PITTSBURGH (NEWSRADIO 1020 KDKA) — When you were little, you probably remember your dad fixing things around the house like repairing plumbing, painting, and other home improvement projects.

Today’s man is less inclined to be that handy – in a new survey, 72 percent of men said they could handle VERY basic home repair or improvement stuff, and 40 percent of men say they either can’t do anything around the house, or they probably could but they’d rather call a handyman anyway. Only 51 percent of all men said they knew how to unclog a toilet.

Are there any handy men left?

KDKA AM’s Larry and John talk to Pete Delevernois, a neighbor of Larry’s who all his other neighbors turn to for home improvement advice. Pete talks about his handy skills, as well as great tips for winter and why most men are envious of his garage.

As someone who works in a home improvement sotre I hate to tell poeole, but most people back then did not know how to repair homes either. They may have found what “worked”, but they often made thing worse instead of better and when the next problem came along that first repair makes a quick fix a major problem. Not everyone was guilty of this, but it shows up often enough to be a real problem for the next owners of the home. So relying on licensed repair people who have some formal training might be more a sign of smartening up rather then a loss of skills that may not have been as abundant as some people might believe.
