PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins made their final roster cuts Monday afternoon.

According to a press release from the Penguins, three players were sent down to the team’s AHL affiliate in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, while one was returned to his junior team.

Jason Williams and Alexandre Picard were re-assigned to the Baby Penguins, while training camp standout defenseman Joe Morrow was sent back to the Portland Winterhawks in the Western Hockey league.

As part of the final roster moves, the Penguins placed Robert Bortuzzo, Sidney Crosby, Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Petersen and Boris Valabik on injured reserve.

Monday’s roster moves knocked the active roster down to 23 players, which include 14 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders.

The Penguins will open up the regular season Thursday night on the road in Vancouver at 10 p.m.
