CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – DNA evidence helped police solve a nearly 10-year-old rape case in Butler County.

The sexual assault happened on June 6, 2002 at the Laurelwood Apartment complex in Cranberry Township.

The woman told police that she awoke to a man standing over her. He allegedly threatened to harm her and her child if she called police.

After he left, the woman called 911. Investigators collected DNA evidence and sent it to the State Police crime lab.

In March of 2010, the State Police laboratory told Cranberry Township police that Ralph Skundrich, a convicted offender, couldn’t be eliminated.

After further DNA testing, police filed charges against him.

Skundrich is already behind bars on unrelated charges.
