Fayette Co. Mom Injured When Gunfire Breaks Out In Uniontown

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- A young mother remains in the hospital today recovering after she was struck in the face by a bullet when gunfire broke out overnight in Fayette County.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. on Lenox Street in Uniontown.

According to authorities, a duplex there was hit with up to 15 shots when a gunman apparently opened fire.

Three young adults and a 4-year-old child were reportedly inside the duplex when the gunfire rang out. The child was sleeping on a mattress in a front room.

"We were just sitting in the living room, playing a game; my nephew was on the bed, just laying there," said one of the men in the duplex when the shooting started. "Tried kicking the door in, it didn't work and they started shooting."

The man didn't want to be identified, but tells KDKA's Ross Guidotti that the boy's mother, identified as 20-year-old Sarah Jordan, did her best to keep her son safe.

"You started hearing gunshots, and I tried to get my cousin to get out of there real fast, but she screamed, 'My baby!' and I realized that her son is in the bed lying down, sleeping," said the man who was inside the duplex. "It was just chaos. She got shot in the face, like in the cheek area."

The boy was not hurt. A bullet did go through another man's trousers, but he was not injured either.

KDKA's Ross Guidotti reports that Uniontown Police say they may have a person of interest in the case.

"It's amazing and we're glad nobody else was hurt in this incident," said Det. Don Gmiter, of the Uniontown Police Department. "The only description that was given was a gray in color dodge SUV."

Jordan was able to talk to police at the scene. She was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital where she is in stable condition and will have to undergo facial reconstruction surgery.
