Thieves Swipe Donation Box From Christmas Light Display

AMBRIDGE (KDKA) -- A couple of thieves swiped a donation box from a Christmas light display at the home of an Ambridge councilman.

For the last four years, Bob Dunn has collected donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in a box outside his home on Maplewood Avenue.

Donations average $2,000 year.

Around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dunn and his wife were jolted by a sound.

"The bang with this box hitting the concrete here," Bob said.

Two guys had ripped the box off the pole.

"I opened the door and I seen him running with the box," he said. "I yelled out. I told her to call 911."

Bob took off after the thieves. They dropped the box, but grabbed the cash.

"I can be $20. It can be a dollar, but you know, he's taking away from kids that really need it more than him," Bob said.

"It's an unthinkable crime – I don't even think Scrooge would do something like this," Ambridge Police Chief Jimmy Mann said.

The box is now chained to the pole and donations continue to come from the community.

"The box is back up and I'm sure he's going to be sitting out there watching and so are we," Chief Mann said.
