1 Dead, 1 Injured In Glassport Accident

GLASSPORT (KDKA) -- A woman was killed and another woman was seriously injured when their vehicle traveled off the Mansfield Bridge overnight and landed on the road below.

Investigators say the Ford Explorer launched off the Mansfield Bridge and landed on West 5th Avenue. The vehicle then burst into flames.

The accident happened around 3 a.m. at the intersection of the Mansfield Bridge and Monongahela Avenue in Glassport.

According to authorities, the SUV tried to make a right turn on to the bridge. A police officer coming the other way told investigators he watched the vehicle flash past.

"He was going down our ramp from Glassport, going toward McKeesport," said Chief Howard Kifer, of the Glassport Police Department. "When he got there, he saw another vehicle coming the opposite direction toward the Mansfield Bridge… high rate of speed. He got down where it leveled off and he heard a large crash. It hit the medial strip, which hit the barrier and took them airborne."

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the woman who was killed as 21-year-old Iesha Tang, of Monroeville. She was taken to McKeesport Hospital and pronounced dead.

A 23-year-old woman, who was also in the vehicle, was flown to a local hospital. She was last listed in critical condition.

A student at Penn State Greater Allegheny, Tang was a Chicago native. Police aren't sure who was behind the wheel, but say the crash was all avoidable.

"It's sad, a tragedy like that," Chief Kifer added. "They're young girls. Around the curve, coming on or off, slow down. We lost a lot of lives down there. It's bad, real bad."
