Neal Huntington Talks AJ Burnett Surgery, McCutchen Contract Situation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Pirates General Manager Neal Huntington joined Joe Starkey and Josh Miller of Seibel, Starkey and Miller on Sportsradio 93.7 The FAN to discuss AJ Burnett's surgery on his fractured orbital bone, and how the pitching staff will overcome the injury.

Huntington said Burnett's injury was just a freak accident, and the team will now have to go through the process of rehabbing and reconditioning AJ, but it certainly hurts that he won't be able to take part in spring training to build up his arm strength.

The team though as of just a couple of weeks ago didn't have Burnett as part of their rotation, and Neal said they'll just go back to how they were operating prior to the trade.

We also talked with Neal about the contract situation with Center Fielder Andrew McCutchen and how optimistic the team is that they can get something done.  The key to Neal though is that the Pirates have four years before they need to get anything done with McCutchen and the shared risk needs to be equal for both sides.
