Pa. Primary Approaches; Romney Crumbled By Cookie

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) — Politics in Pennsylvania are heating up as the Primary approaches next week. Huge races for Congress and state government are ratcheting up, especially with Jason Altmire and Mark Critz, who are battling over a Congressional seat of their combined districts.

Meanwhile, presumptive Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney rolled through Pittsburgh earlier this week to drum up support for the November election, but it isn’t his handshaking and baby kissing that is making national news.

Romney called out a woman who brought him some cookies that he immediately identified as coming from a bakery. What he did and how he said it is making national headlines, especially for Bethel Bakery who made the rogue cookies.

KDKA AM’s Larry Richert talks to KDKA-TV’s Jon Delano about what is expected in the Primary, who’s running, and how people are crumbling Romney over the cookie comment.

“I never thought when I coined the phrase ‘Cookie-gate’ in jest [Wednesday] on Marty Griffin’s show that this would go so viral,” said Delano, KDKA-TV Political Editor. “There’s just been a lot of pick up on this, and you know, it was really totally inadvertent by Mitt Romney; and you know; I wouldn’t make anything big out of the whole thing.

“It’s fun to talk about; and obviously, Bethel Bakery, the object of the dissing by Gov. Romney a couple of days ago, they’re making the most of it,” he added. “Even today, they are have a special, you can get a half dozen more cookies for free when you buy a dozen cookies in honor of Cookie-gate.”
