PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A sexual assault over the weekend has police and students near Slippery Rock University on alert.
On Monday, officials continued to investigate the assault and warned others on ways to stay safe.
State police said they are conducting a thorough investigation into a woman’s claims that she was sexually assaulted by multiple assailants.
The incident allegedly happened behind the Ginger Hill Tavern in the early morning hours on Saturday.
Students at Slippery Rock University said the watering hole is usually very crowded on the weekends, which is a good thing for police as they conduct their investigation.
“Right now, state police are looking for any leads. If anyone was a witness to it or if anybody heard anything,” Trooper Dan Kesten said.
The 20-year-old victim is a student at Slippery Rock, according to state police. Very few details about the reported attack were released. University officials did send out an e-mail to the students, informing them of the incident and encouraging anyone with information to contact state police.
The news was disturbing to some on campus.
“It’s kind of scary to see people just rape females like that. No respect for their bodies. It’s kind of scary,” Jordan Ziegler said.
“I try and be really careful and always go out with friends when I do go out,” Emily Schneider
Trooper Kesten said that is good advice and also said that to keep yourself safe, limit alcohol content and avoid any drug use.
“Be aware when they go out. Go out with a friend. Go out with someone you know and trust and also take steps to make sure that you’re a more difficult person to victimize,” Trooper Kesten said.
Slippery Rock University officials said they are fully cooperating with state police and will be of any assistance during this investigation.
If you have any information, you’re asked to contact state police.
