Local Law Enforcement Agencies Learn Crime Scene Investigation

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Members of several different agencies from all over Allegheny County learned about processing crime scenes.

Each room was set up like a different crime scene, everything from a meth lab to a shooting. Every crime scene has evidence and that's what makes drills like this so critical.

"These have been reconstructed by people that know what those scenes are like and know what the important part of those scenes are," Dr. Karl Williams, Allegheny County Medical Examiner, said.

Investigators went through six different scenes all filled with evidence and complete with crime scene tape.

They focused on the 3 R's – recognize, record and recover. Another important aspect of this exercise was teamwork.

"When we collect the evidence in the field, it doesn't mean anything if the lab can't do anything with it, so us knowing the proper collection procedures is very important, so once it gets to the medical examiner's office they can get good results from it," Ross Township Police Detective Brian Kohlhepp said.

Investigators from eight different agencies participated in the event organized by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office.
