Bucs: Bedard Leaves Game With Injury

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) -- Pirates starting pitcher Erik Bedard was removed from Wednesday night's game against Washington with back spasms.

Bedard pitched just one inning. He was removed during the first at bat of the second inning and said after the game that the pain came right after his final pitch.

"Usually a back spasm is just one little thing you do and it starts hurting," Bedard said.

He added that he hadn't had any problems in the first inning or earlier in the day.

Bedard also said that he had back spasms in 2008 in a similar situation -- one pitch and the pain came. There was recovery time needed but it wasn't for more than a start or two, he said.

"You just do nothing for a couple days and see how fast it comes back," Bedard said.

Brad Lincoln came in in relief, pitching three innings. Jared Hughes, Juan Cruz, Jason Grilli and Joel Hanrahan finished the five innings.

There is no timetable set for Bedard's return.
