Trolley Partially Derails, Causes Major Delays

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A trolley derailment near the Port Authority's South Hills Junction station caused some major delays for T riders Sunday afternoon.

According to Port Authority spokesperson Jim Ritchie, the front wheels of a light rail car came off the track and it was blocking outbound traffic.

The derailment meant lengthy delays around 1 p.m.

Port Authority spokesperson Jim Ritchie says crews were working into the evening to fix the problem and get things back on schedule.

"They're working on the vehicle. Basically, that involves uprighting it, getting it back up onto the tracks, [and] that can take several hours to accomplish," said Ritchie. "But in the meantime, we're able to basically drive the other T vehicles around the disabled vehicle."

Most fans had already gotten to the Pirates' game over at PNC Park on time, but some were left stranded downtown.

Otherwise, the Port Authority says the T operated on time this weekend as extra cars were put into service after some long delays last weekend during the Pittsburgh Marathon and an afternoon Pirates' game.
