Community Speaks Out Against Proposed Cuts In Pine-Richland School District

PINE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A local community spoke out against proposed cuts within their school district.

At a school board meeting in the Pine-Richland School District, the public spoke out against proposed cuts to physical education, arts and music programs.

Jackie Evancho, a former student who shot to fame after singing on "America's Got Talent," urged the school board not to make the cuts.

"My little sister is 8 years old and she will be coming here soon, in two years, and she is very looking forward to be taking these classes in music, art and gym," she said. "She also wants to become a big star and to live her dream, but that can't be possible if all of this is being cut away from the enjoyment that we have."

People also stood against teacher furloughs.

"Young, ambitious teachers are the last resource that any school should cut from their budget," a man said.

"Please be smart with our money and please don't make the changes," urged William, a young student.

The district released a statement: "Pine-Richland School District is trying to find a way to reduce expenditures in the least impactful way. Pine-Richland is experiencing what many districts have been experiencing nationwide for several years.

"While we've trimmed our budge over the past few years, we've been fortunate not to have to cut teaching positions up to this point. We will continue providing a strong academic program for our students."

The board was expected to vote Monday night.
