1 Dead, 1 Injured In Butler Co. Crash

CLAY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - A Butler County crash involving a car and a garbage truck left one person dead and another injured Monday morning.

According to police, the vehicles collided on Route 308 in Clay Township around 4:45 a.m.

Despite their best efforts to get the driver to a hospital as quickly as possible, he died at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. He has been identified as Nicholas Spisak, 23, of West Sunbury.

Maloney Birckbicher, 18, was a passenger in the Camaro.

She was ejected from the car and flown to Allegheny General Hospital. Police said Spisak was on his way home from the hospital, after visiting a close family member who just had a stroke.

The Camaro was mangled after crossing the center line and into the path of a garbage truck. The truck tried to swerve, but was unable to avoid the Camaro.

After the collision, the Camaro slid roof-first into a tree, which trapped Spisak.

The driver of the garbage truck was coming from the West Sunbury Waste Management site just up the road.  The driver was not injured.

Police have not said for certain if speed contributed to the fatal impact in the crash.

Neighbors said people speed along the road every day.

"The garbage trucks go really, really fast on this road.  There's a dump on the other side of West Sunbury and that's where they're all going and it's a really dangerous road," Debbie Amadolea said.

State police said there is video from the waste management truck involved and that's something they're trying to obtain.
