PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — They lined up in the lobby of Children’s Hospital – doctors, nurses and volunteers – for the autograph of a shoe shine man from Monessen.

His book, “Albert’s Kids,” tells stories spanning 30 years of generosity. During that time, Albert Lexie donated all his tips – $175,000 so far – to the Children’s Hospital Free Care Fund.

Book purchasers say he’s an inspiration.

“I’m so excited,” says one woman. “I just signed up to be a volunteer myself.”

“I get to see Albert every Tuesday and Thursday,” says another. “He’s one of our heroes.”

Dr. Joe Carcillo collected newspaper clippings and recorded interviews for the book that Albert only dreamed of. Until now.

“We sat down,” the doctor says, “and I interviewed him for about a year, documenting his life and writing a book. After we wrote the book, we then had a nice young lady, 15-year-old lady, illustrated the book for us.”

More than 100 copies were sold in the first hour of signing. Book sales, of course, benefit sick children in need.

“I like to see them smile,” Lexie says. “I don’t like to see them sick or anything like that.”

A smile and a shoe shine? For Albert and his kids, that’s exactly how it works.
