2 Charged With Abusing 11-Month-Old Boy In Uniontown

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) -- Two people are facing charges for allegedly abusing an 11-month-old boy.

When police asked Sheldon Marks how the boy got multiple broken ribs and a skull fracture, he said he didn't know.

But authorities say Marks was abusing the child and in at least one instance picked the little boy up by one arm and threw him to his mother, Lisa Hairston.

"That's shocking for someone to do something to a little kid like that – that's unbelievable," Todd Wallace, a neighbor, said.

Uniontown police believe the abuse began in April of this year right after Marks moved into Hairston's home on Dunlap Street.

It was the end of May when Hairston decided to take the baby to the hospital. Marks told her that she shouldn't do it because Children and Youth Services would be called.

The criminal complaint says that Hairston took the baby to Uniontown Hospital after she noticed a rash on his chest.

Doctors examining the baby found his injuries were so severe that he had to be taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.

In addition to the bruises and fractures, authorities also say the child was malnourished. Police say Hairston admitted she'd been diluting the milk she was feeding the baby.

"I don't know where her mind's at but me personally, I couldn't see anyone hurting my children ever," Lisa Vaughns, a neighbor, said.
