Driver Dies After Freak Accident On Parkway West

SCOTT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A young woman was killed and her passenger was injured when a tire struck their car Monday night on the Parkway West.

According to police, the accident happened near the Carnegie exit in Scott Township around 11:16 p.m. Monday.

A 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling west lost a rear tire, which proceeded to bounce down the road and over the barrier into oncoming traffic.

The tire struck the roof of 2010 Hyundai Elantra, which started to lose control until the passenger grabbed the steering wheel and brought the vehicle to a stop on the berm.

Both of the occupants in the Elantra were taken to a local hospital. The driver, 19-year-old Katie Puwalowski, died this afternoon at UPMC Mercy Hospital.

The passenger was treated and released.

The driver of the Jeep, 18-year-old David Praskovich, was not injured. KDKA's Brenda Waters reports State police are investigating and will determine if he will be charged.
