Pittsburgh Motorcycle Officer Struck By SUV

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh police motorcycle officer is recovering after being injured Thursday evening in a traffic accident in Point Breeze.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. at Penn Avenue and North Lexington Street, just blocks from two recent fatal accidents involving bicyclists.

Police say several officers from the city's traffic unit were working last evening to enforce bicycle safety measures on Penn Avenue when an SUV collided with the officer's motorcycle.

The driver and passenger remained at the scene while authorities conducted their investigation.

The officer suffered what appeared to be shoulder injuries and abrasions in the crash. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. His name has not been released.

Earlier this week, 48-year-old Anthony Green of Wilkinsburg died from injuries he suffered when an SUV hit him in the 7700-block of Penn Avenue, just across the Wilkinsburg border with the city.

One week before, 46-year-old James Price of Homewood was struck and killed in a hit-and-run accident at Penn Avenue and Pennfield Court.

A white bicycle now sits along Penn Avenue as a memorial to the men.
