STANTON HEIGHTS (KDKA)- A police officer has been treated and released Friday after being hit by a round in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

Police were called to Millerdale Street around 5 a.m. for a domestic incident between a man and a woman.

The woman told police she took the man out for a walk to try and calm him down. During that walk, several shots were fired.

A few minutes later, Officer Andrew Baker confronted the armed man along Schenley Manor Drive, and gunshots were exchanged. Police say the suspect fired the first shot, hitting the officer in the chest.

Officer Baker was wearing a bullet-proof vest, which stopped the bullet. He was taken to the hospital as standard procedure, to make sure he didn’t have any internal injuries. Baker was treated and released around 6 a.m. on Friday.

The officer took cover after being shot and fired back at the suspect. The man, identified by police as 25-year-old Tiant Mitchell, was hit in the buttocks and fell into some nearby weeds.

The woman who had been arguing with the man was also injured. But it’s unclear if she was shot.

Both of them were taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment. They are said to be in good condition.

Officer Baker was placed on paid administrative leave, as per protocol. Police told us this is the third time Baker has been shot at on the job in the last three weeks.

Friday morning’s shooting took place just a block from the scene of a deadly police shooting in April of 2009.

Officers Stephen Mayhle, Eric Kelly and Paul Sciullo II were killed in that shooting.

Richard Poplawski was sentenced to death in the case. Read more on that case at this link.
