PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — If you’re part of Pittsburgh’s music scene you likely know Dave Whaley, a talented drummer who plays with “The Pump Fakes” and other bands.

And if you’re a collector, you’ve run into Whaley who also manages “Dave’s Music Mine” on Carson Street.

“Somebody found me and called 911,” said Whaley from his hospital bed.

It was Sunday, about 2 a.m., Whaley, 44, was walking home after meeting a friend when he got to the intersection of Sarah and 20th Streets.

“A car pulls up and almost runs the intersection; almost hits me and I kinda yelled at the guy,” Whaley said.

He says the driver whipped around the corner, jumped out and with no warning smashed him in the eye.

“Broke my orbital bone there,” Whaley said. “Gonna have surgery tomorrow.”

Aside from the shattered orbital bone, Whaley’s face took a lot of stitches.

“I don’t know if he hit me once or twice,” Whaley added. “Next thing I knew, I’m getting off the pavement trying to shake it off.”

It was just in September that a young bicyclist had his throat slashed in another alleged road rage incident of the South Side. A suspect in that case was arrested.

“They get what’s called ‘beer muscles,’ and they… everybody wants to start something with somebody else,” says Whaley.

“And there’s gonna be more if they don’t put a stop to it. There’ll be more,” says Don Hickly, who’s lived in on the South Side for 21 years.

He knows Whaley from the Music Mine and can’t believe that somebody would hurt him.

“And he’s a real nice guy; I see him all the time,” said Hickly. “He’s quiet. He does his work.”

Whaley describes his attacker as a light-skinned African American man about 6-feet-1-inch tall, between 190 to 220-pounds and was driving a Mustang, possibly red.

Whaley both lives and makes his living on the South Side. He hopes who did this is caught.
