"Holiday Lights" Kickoff Celebration Draws Local Families To Kennywood

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) -- Kennywood Park officially started the holiday season Friday with the kickoff of Holiday Lights.

The second annual event is expected to draw thousands this holiday season.

On Friday evening, families from across the Pittsburgh region bundled up to enjoy more than one million lights gleaming and flickering throughout the park.

"This is the night when the work really pays off and you see the families coming and the little kids and grandma and grandpa," said Jeff Filicko, of Kennywood Park. "They just see Kennywood is such a different way with the lights and the trees and the rides running."

Several rides are open for the display.

Entertainment from area choirs and dance groups can be seen as well.

Families say it's hard to choose what their favorite part is, but for the kids, Santa Claus is their highlight.

"It's really fun here," said Jason Liebig, of Moon Township. "I love riding all the rides."

"You can ride on different rides and see all the lights," added Emma McFarland, of Monroeville.

The lights display run from now until the New Year.
