PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Today has been declared Wiz Khalifa day in Pittsburgh, but not everyone is excited that the local rapper is being honored with his own day.
His unabashed endorsement of marijuana, including the DOPE hat he wore to City Hall, has some saying, maybe he’s not the symbol the city should be endorsing.
Tuesday the rapper even sent out a tweet saying, “I also wanna thank the city of Pittsburgh for making 12-12 “Wiz Khalifa Day” in the burgh. Get stoned :-)”
Pittsburgh City Councilman William Peduto made the proclamation Tuesday. “Wiz Khalifa is proud of his Pittsburgh background and takes every opportunity to sing the praises of Pittsburgh around the world,” Peduto said.
Born Cameron Jibril Thomaz, Wiz Khalifa is a graduate of Taylor Alderdice and an avid Pittsburgh promoter.
His song “Black and Yellow” has become an anthem of Pittsburgh pride. Khalifa told reporters, “it’s cool to be cool in other places, but when your hometown embraces you, it makes you feel really good.”
Khalifa’s newest CD debuted this week at number two on the billboard album charts.
He’s scheduled to perform at CONSOL Energy Center Wednesday night.
NewsRadio 1020 KDKA’s Mike Pintek spoke to Khalifa’s DJ Bonics about the controversy. Here’s what he had to say about it.
