Westmoreland Co. School District Offers At-Home Drug Tests
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Superintendent of the Hempfield Area School District says he will "fight for the lives of his students."
Recent drug busts and overdose arrests have a lot of people in the Westmoreland County area on edge.
The district is offering parents of incoming Freshmen in-home drug testing kits.
Butler-based Candle Incorporated, which runs the drug prevention program, The Reality Tour, has partnerships with school in 11 states.
Locally, Hempfield is the only district footing the bill for the service, which is a voluntary program.
A representative from Candle Inc. handed out the free kits at the Freshman Orientation meeting at Hempfield Area High School Tuesday Night.
The district operates a similar program in the middle school.
Superintendent Andrew Leopold declined an on-camera interview but said in a statement, "The drug situation in our schools will not be ignored."
