1 Killed In Munhall Shooting

MUNHALL (KDKA) – One person is dead after an early Sunday morning shooting in Munhall.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the shooting happened in the 900-block of East 8th Avenue around 3:30 a.m.

Police say they have arrested 24-year-old Paul Barone in connection with the shooting. They say video surveillance from a pizza shop near where the shooting took place showed Baron firing shots into car near the parking lot at Club Pink in Munhall.

The victim is not seen in the video, but is identified as 32-year-old John Hunter Sumpter of Wilkinsburg. He was found dead in the front seat of the car.

Police say Barone had been in the club for several hours and was seen arguing with Sumpter outside.

Shattered glass was found in the street near the club and a nearby garbage truck was also hit by bullets.

After the shooting, police say Barone hopped in a car with two other men and took off down Ravine Street at a high rate of speed, before pulling over near John Beckman's house.

"I heard a commotion out there," he said. "I live right here in that house and I looked out the window and I seen a car there. Somebody jumped out the car and took off running up that hill, right there."

Beckman said police caught up quickly.

"Then, the police came," he said. "They were close behind them."

Police detained the two men, but Barone was able to flee on foot. Eventually, though, he was apprehended and police recovered the suspected murder weapon -- a Glock handgun. The two other men in the car were questioned, but not arrested.

Barone was taken to the Allegheny County Jail an is charged with criminal homicide.
