PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – With the team going out and signing a new catcher this off-season, the Pirates pitching staff was looking towards spring training as an opportunity to familiarize themselves with Russell Martin.

Reliever Jared Hughes joined Starkey, Miller and Mueller to talk about this process, and how things have been going.

“He’s extremely intelligent and he’s a great communicator.  If you talk to any pitcher, that’s what we’re all looking for in our catcher,” he said. “We’re looking for somebody who can really communicate  with us so we can get…on the same page.”

Hughes also touched on what he has seen from some of the teams highly rated prospects and how Jason Grilli is going to handle the closer position.
