SUV Crashes After Being Shot At On Route 51

STOWE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Police in Stowe Township shut down part of Route 51 for much of the afternoon while they investigated a vehicle shooting involving at least one high-powered assault rifle.

Investigators at the scene told KDKA's Kym Gable that people inside at least two other vehicles fired shots at the SUV, which then slammed into a utility pole near the intersection of Kennedy Lane.

It started on a dead-end street, but ended on a busy artery of Route 51.

The driver was not injured but the vehicle is riddled with bullet holes.

Multiple shell casings indicate at least one of the weapons was an assault rifle.

The suspect vehicles got away.

But now the crash scene is also a crime scene.

The man behind the wheel of the car that crashed is not only a victim, but a suspect. Police led him away from the scene in handcuffs after they learned he was wanted on an unrelated warrant.

Police also say they questioned him on the scene about what happened, but the victim's stories just don't add up.

Considering the number of bullet holes in the car, police say he was lucky he wasn't hit.

"We did find at least a dozen spent shells up there," Stowe Township Police Chief Matthew Preininger said.

Police say they are currently looking for at least one vehicle with one gunman.
