Local Woman Killed, Husband Critically Injured In Fla. Crash

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A local woman was killed and her husband taken to the hospital following a crash in Florida early Sunday morning.

Police say 48-year-old Melina Helbig of Rochester was killed and her husband, 50-year-old Robert Helbig, was taken to the hospital in critical condition after their car was struck by a truck just before 3 a.m.

A witness says the couple, who were travelling in a red Sebring with another couple, were hit by a speeding truck while driving through an intersection. The driver of the Sebring, 56-year-old Dorothy Operhall, and her boyfriend, 51-year-old Leonard Simmons, were also killed in the crash. According to police, all four individuals were wearing seat belts at the time.

Police say the force of the impact caused both cars to land on their roofs.

The driver of the truck, 21-year-old Edward Casey McCoy, was taken to the hospital with several broken bones and was not wearing a seat belt. Police say they believe speed and impairment may have played a factor in the crash.

McCoy could face charges pending the toxicology report.
