Bomb Squad Called For Suspicious Device In Monaca

MONACA (KDKA) – The Bomb Squad was called for a suspicious device found in Beaver County.

According to emergency dispatchers, the device was found in the 1900-block of Marshall Road at the Spring Run Apartments in Monaca.

What had appeared to be a pipe bomb was first discovered by a 3-year-old girl.

The girl immediately showed it to her father, who then called police.

Now officials are investigating what it actually was and who put it there.

Many residents of the nearby apartment complex are angry that a suspicious device was left out in a grassy area where so many children play.

"Brought it in and said, 'here daddy, I found this,'" the girl's father, Tony Monac said.

The device was described as a 12-inch long cylinder wrapped in duct tape.

Police took no chances, evacuating about half of the apartment complex and calling the Allegheny County Bomb Squad.

Sources told KDKA-TV that it was a real bomb and the bomb squad detonated it. However, the police chief says he hopes to preserve some of the bomb for evidence and is asking anyone who knows anything or saw anything suspicious to give them a call.
