Man Shot 4 Times On McKeesport Basketball Court

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A man is in the hospital after he was shot four times in McKeesport.

It happened after 2:30 p.m. at a basketball court in Crawford Village Sunday.

Reportedly the man was shot in the back and was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital.

Neighbors say it was a peaceful, quiet Sunday afternoon until the shots rang out.

One neighbor said a group of young men were playing basketball when things turned ugly.

"All kinds of arguments then shots were fired," he said. "I was getting all the kids, putting them in the house, everybody else's kids too."

He did not want to be identified, but said he grabbed 10 children and quickly moved them out of harm's way.

Witnesses say the victim ran into a nearby apartment and the gunman fled. The motive behind the shooting is unclear.

This was the second shooting since Wednesday, when 59-year-old John Haas, a jitney driver, was shot and killed in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

Neighbors blame drugs and gangs.

"I just feel they need to have cops on the beat," one neighbor said. "They got to have it because this is getting ridiculous."

Another neighbor says it's not the first time trouble has broken out on the basketball court.

"I'm going to go over tomorrow and get a petition put up," she said. "They got to tear that down, it's a nuisance. Some of these little ones are going to get hurt, something has to be done."

Police say the victim is expected to survive.

No word on any arrests.
