Pitching Coach Searage On Cole Debut: 'I Just Want Him To Be Himself'

PITTSBURGH (93.7 THE FAN) - Tuesday night is the much anticipated debut of Pirates pitcher, Gerrit Cole. The 2011 first overall pick in the First Year Player Draft is the top prospect in the Pirates' system.

To gear up for the game, the Fan Morning Show talked to Pirates pitching coach, Ray Searage.

When asked what Ray wants to see out of the young star, he responded, "I just want him to be himself."

The nerves could get to Cole, though.

"That's why Russell [Martin] is there, and I might have to go out and calm him down a bit at some point," Ray said.

As for a game plan, Ray does not want to see Cole try to manipulate pitches, and get too fine with his accuracy.

"I just want him to hit the mitt," Ray said. But, it may not be easy, because Cole has never see this caliber of hitters before.

We also hear a funny story about Ray's Major League debut.
