Pittsburgh Won't Bid To Host 2024 Summer Olympics

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh is declining an invitation to bid on hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Pittsburgh was one of 35 American cities that the U.S. Olympic Committee encouraged in February to submit a bid.

But the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that isn't going to happen.

Mayoral spokeswoman Marissa Doyle says in an email that there wasn't enough community support for such a bid.

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald agreed the greater Pittsburgh area never rallied around the idea.

Fitzgerald says, "It would cost two to three billion - that with a 'b' - dollars" which he called a "big risk."

About 10 cities have expressed interest in bidding, including Philadelphia, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Diego. The U.S. committee must decide by 2015 which bid to support.
