Big Butler Fair Offering New Rides For 158th Season

BUTLER (KDKA) -- The Big Butler Fair opened Friday for its 158th season.

Despite the history and tradition, there's always room for something new.

Marc Janus, of Powers Great America Midways, says brand new rides like the Genesis keep things fresh.

"We've also got the new Rock Star ride which actually looks like a giant guitar," he adds. "It spins in a circle. You face forward. It's got the LED lights. We're going green. Energy efficient, but gives off a super light pattern at night."

Familiar sights are also a lure, as generations keep coming back for an annual dose of nostalgia.

"When I was a little kid I used to come here," says Ben Rooney.

Now he is vice president of the fair.

"The carnival opens up at one o'clock, and the shows start at two," he says. "Then, in the evening, we have concerts, demolition derbies, truck pulls, tractor pulls. We have it all."

He says the fair has also been known to spark a romance, now and then.

"Oh yeah, oh yeah. This is where I found my sweetheart, years ago," Rooney said. "We had horses then. I had a horse and she had a horse."

The Big Butler Fair continues through July 6.
