Letang Deal An Issue Of Cap Space For PG's Rorabaugh

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - The Penguins have been in discussions with Kris Letang and his agent to get a contract extension done. To talk about that, and the rest of the free agents-to-be, the Fan Morning Show welcomed Post-Gazette Empty Netters Blogger, Seth Rorabaugh to the program on Monday.

"There might be some issues with how the money is distributed," Rorabaugh said of front loading the contract being a potential hang up. As was initially reported, the no-trade clause might not be the biggest hurdle to clear.

The reports over the weekend had Letang's cap hit for his rumored deal at $7.25 million. Seth thinks that is right about where the market value is for a guy of Letang's caliber. But, when Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are making taking up over $17 million of cap space, it might not be intelligent to spend that much money on a defenseman.

In order to keep their cap number low, the Penguins will have to trust younger guys more. Seth tells us that they have invested first-round picks in guys like Simon Despres and Beau Bennett, so Dan Bylsma will have to give them more minutes.

We also hear Seth's thoughts on the Penguins remaining free agents.
