Former Manager Art Howe: Home Run Derby Doesn't Ruin Swings

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) -- Former Mets manager Art Howe joined The Fan Morning Show on Friday to talk about the Pirates with his former team in town for this weekend's Mets vs. Pirates series.

He thinks the Pirates are making progress despite the way their last two seasons have ended.

"They're learning from these last few years of experiences," Howe said.

He likes that they brought in veterans this off-season, and he's impressed by their pitching.

"They've got the best pitching in the league," Howe said. "That's the name of the game."

He doesn't buy the theory that the Home Run Derby ruins swings, because he views it as very similar to batting practice.

He feels sabermetrics have a place in baseball, but that people have begun to use them way too much.
