Mercer: Barmes Has Helped Me On And Off The Field
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan)-- The Pittsburgh Pirates won their second straight game Friday night, defeating the New York Mets 3-2 in 11 innings.
The hero of the game was Jordy Mercer, who had his first walk-off winner.
"I wanted to go up there and make something happen. I (saw) Cutch (Andrew McCutchen) on second base and I knew that he was one of the fastest guys in the game," Mercer told Bob Pompeani. "I was just trying to find a hole somewhere because I knew if I could find a hole somewhere he was going to score, so that gave me a boost of confidence when I went to the plate."
Mercer has been second base with the injury to Neil Walker. Prior to Walker's injury, Mercer had replaced Clint Barmes at shortstop. Mercer gave a lot of credit to Barmes.
"He's meant everything, not only on the field but off the field. I feel like that I can go to him and ask him anything, about what's going to happen, or even what am I supposed to wear on the plane," Mercer said.
Mercer added that it's a big boost to have a veteran like that to answer questions.
