Van Ends Up In Basement After Crashing Into Homewood House
HOMEWOOD (KDKA) – A van went off the road and hit a fire hydrant before crashing into a vacant house in Homewood Tuesday morning.
According to police, the crash happened around 1:35 a.m. on North Lang Avenue.
The van initially came to rest on the first floor of the home, but the floor gave way and the vehicle ended up in the basement.
“This time, the car not only went into the building, it went down into the building. So, this is kind of a unique situation e have here. Currently, the responders last night put a temp post up. The building is secure, there’s no danger of it collapsing,” John Jennings, the acting chief of the Bureau OF Building Inspection, said.
The driver and two passengers were able to climb out of the vehicle under their own power. They are believed to range in age from teenagers t early 20s. One went to the hospital, but is expected to be okay.
The driver also fled from the scene.
With the structure of the home compromised, the building will likely need to be demolished.
“The building is probably a total loss at this point. We’ll see if there are any owners to the building. Our first research this morning, we couldn’t find a given owner to the property. We will do further research and work with them. If not, we’ll take it down and fill in the site and make it a total demolition,” Jennings said.
