High School Hazing Video Being Investigated
Hot On CBS Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Last week KDKA reported that several parents showed up at Upper St. Clair Police headquarters to file complaints about hazing at the high school.
The parents said their freshmen sons were victims of a brutal hazing ritual, which many call an initiation.
Now there is video of the incident.
The videos show the repeated blows the audio reveals laughter and encouragement as incoming freshmen are paddled — allegedly by upperclassmen who attend Upper St. Clair High School.
First they record the hazing and then they take still photos. In some of the images, you can clearly see the red welts and large blisters on the boys’ buttocks.
Parents tell KDKA in some cases, wooden boards were used, in others hockey sticks.
At this point, it does not appear that those behind the hazing are part of any school sports team or organization.
The mother of one of the alleged victims tells KDKA the older boys tell or text the younger students to show up at a certain place for their paddling.
If they refuse to take part, they’re told they will get it worse when school starts.
The pictures and video have been sent to dozens of classmates and the reactions on social media are piling up.
These tweets showed up after KDKA’s first report:
“good job to the upcoming seniors for making the news for paddling #loveit”
“THAT’S AWESOME! my grade was on TV for hazing #bestupperclassmen”
“This is such bull(expletive)!!! You should be honored to be pattled (sic)!!”
Reportedly this kind of hazing has been happening in the district for years. Reactions are mixed with some people saying it’s no big deal and others are saying serious action needs to be taken.
