Local Farmers Renting Chickens For The Summer
INDIANA, Pa. (AP) – A Pennsylvania couple has an answer for people who think they’d like a chicken but are worried about buyer’s remorse.
The Indiana Gazette reported Sunday that Freeport residents Phil and Jenn Thompkins are in the business of renting chickens out for the summer to those who aren’t sure if backyard egg raising is for them.
Jenn Thompkins says the idea came from watching friends struggle to learn how to raise chickens for their eggs. They provide a starter kit with two egg-laying hens, a wheeled coop, feed and a water dish.
Their first rental hen went out in July, and they’re hoping to widen the business next spring, with delivery in May.
The hens lay between 8 and 14 eggs a week, productivity that declines in the winter.
