Fiery Car Crash In Fayette Co. Leaves 1 Dead

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) –Police are investigating after an accident in Fayette County left one person dead Sunday night.

According to police, the accident happened on Buena Vista Road in Franklin Township around 9:44 p.m.

A woman traveling north lost control of her 1999 Dodge Neon while negotiating a left curve. The vehicle went off the road, over a culvert and hit a tree.

The vehicle then burst into flames.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the driver in the road. She has been identified as 33-year-old Shawna Courie.

However, a passenger in the vehicle was unable to get out and was pronounced dead at the scene.

"We do on occasion have vehicles that catch fire, whether it be from mechanical means or whether it's from a crash, but to be involved where he wasn't able to exit the vehicle and that could be the cause of death, that is quite rare," Tpr. Stefani Plume said.

The passenger has been identified as 25-year-old Andrew Vrabel.

Courie was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, but her condition is unknown.

At this point, state police do not plan to charge her.
